SKorea set to resume US tariff talks at APEC

**Title** South Korea Set to Resume US Tariff Talks at APEC Meeting

As tensions surrounding international trade continue to simmer, South Korea is poised to resume tariff talks with the United States on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting. The move comes as ministers from top economies converge to meet with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, who has been engaged in bilateral negotiations.

The stakes are high for South Korea's auto industry, which accounts for a significant 27 percent of its exports to the United States. The imposition of 25 percent tariffs on automobiles by President Donald Trump in early April has had a substantial impact, with Seoul recording a $66 billion trade surplus with Washington last year.

Seoul is seeking to leverage these talks by making commitments to purchase more US liquefied natural gas (LNG) and offering support in shipbuilding, an industry where South Korea holds a leadership position. The country aims to avoid Trump's steep tariffs by achieving significant progress in the negotiations.

Greer has been busy meeting with ministers from top economies, including Chinese international trade representative Li Chenggang, just days after the two met in Geneva and agreed to slash tit-for-tat tariffs for 90 days. South Korean Minister of Trade and Industry Ahn Duk-geun is also scheduled to meet Greer on Friday.

As the talks progress, South Korea's shipbuilding industry is under scrutiny. Earlier this week, Greer met with Chung Ki-sun, the vice chairman of HD Hyundai, which owns South Korea's largest shipbuilding company. This meeting marked the first time a US trade representative had met an official from South Korea's shipbuilding industry.

The discussion covered cooperation with US shipmaker Huntington Ingalls Industries and exploratory talks about supporting South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean, which provides maintenance, repair, and overhaul services for US Navy vessels. Following the meeting, shares of Hanwha Ocean rose nearly three percent on Friday morning, while HD Hyundai Heavy Industries gained as much as 3.6 percent.

As the world waits with anticipation to see what progress will be made in these talks, one thing is clear the mercurial nature of global trade relations has never been more evident.

I made the following changes

1.
