**The Heartbreaking Reality Brits Abandon Pets as Living Costs Bite**

As the cost-of-living crisis continues to grip the UK, a distressing trend has emerged thousands of heartbroken Brits are abandoning their pets due to financial struggles. The Mayhew animal shelter in London has seen a staggering surge in abandoned animals this year, with over 130 taken in alone.

For Elvira Meucci-Lyons, the CEO of the Mayhew shelter, it's not just about the numbers – it's about the human stories behind each furry friend. Behind every animal we take in there's a human story, she says wistfully. The stories are heartbreaking pets being given up because their owners can no longer afford to care for them.

The RSPCA has reported a 32% rise in abandonment cases since the pandemic, with over 5,700 animals abandoned in just the first few months of this year. However, the pressure is pushing them to their limits.

**The Emotional Toll**

As heartbreaking as these stories are, they also highlight the emotional toll that abandoning pets takes on both humans and animals. Mayhew staff struggle with the weight of responsibility, knowing that they can't help every pet in need.

It's heartbreaking – we go to bed at night thinking about the dogs and cats we can't help, says Meucci-Lyons. It's a fastidious approach that defines the shelter's dedicated team meticulous in their care for each animal, yet also compassionate towards the humans who are forced to make difficult decisions.

As the UK faces this crisis, it's crucial that we prioritize pet welfare and support those struggling to care for their furry friends.
